Where should transgendered people obey the call of nature?

If you live in the United Kingdom, and are transgendered, you are free to use whatever public toilet facility you feel most comfortable with. There is no law to say that you must use the men's or the women's public conveniences. In practice, most transgendered people will use the women's toilets, because they dress and look like women and regard themselves as women for nearly all practical purposes. It also causes less embarrassment all round if they use the women's facilities. However, in Houston, Texas (and presumably in some other American cities) this is now illegal, thanks to a public vote. In practice it will probably make very little difference - who is is to know whether a person who looks like a woman and walks into a women's toilet was born female or has undergone a sex change?

Interesting title. I had to read a couple of times. Just curious though, do you know how the vote in Huston told place. Was it in the city hall by officials or by the people in the city? Suspect it was council decision.? I think it is one of those rules/laws that will not be enforced just there if a court ever needed some kind of ruling.

This was one of those general referenda that Americans are so fond of. See for details.
Houston voters reject moves to enact protections for transgender and gay people after a divisive campaign that has lasted more than a year.

What an odd law to pass, like you say who is to know if it is a man or a woman going into the girls toilet.

I imagine that most will not obey this law.

To solve that problem, countries like Canada, the USA, and United Kingdom should add 2 more washrooms - - It would appear like this: 1. Women's washroom 2. Men's washroom 3. men-turned-women washroom 4. women-turned-men washroom. Not to mention a family washroom.

What would be wrong with just having unisex facilities - individual cubicles with their own handbasins and driers as well as a toilet?

what an odd question! no transgender - no wasting time for choosing the toliet. I am sure both male and female here in Russia won't understand it if a transgender enters any toilet. Tough men enter Gentlemen, pretty women enter Ladies. No exception.

@TypicalRussian What I didn't understand was the notion that a transgendered person should not use any toilet - everybody has a bladder that needs to be emptied from time to time!
