Is it Using the Lord’s Name in Vain?

When I was growing up my very religious Seventh-Day Adventist foster mother warned me about using the Lord’s name in vain. I couldn’t even say, “gee,” because she believe it was short for, “Jesus.” (If you look, “gee,” up in the dictionary one of the origins says just that.) Today I was looking through my emails. Whenever I do this I check the spam. I have found emails that are not spam in the spam so I always give it a quick glance over. There was an email title, “In Jesus’ Name.” I knew it was spam without opening it so I deleted it. But then I thought if someone is using, “Jesus,” to fool people into reading a spam email, is that using the Lord’s name in vain? My conclusion was it would have to be. The sender of the email is trying to use the Lord’s name in fooling people. Therefore the Lord’s name is used in a deceptive way. And that is using the Lord’s name with a lack of respect. My foster mother told me to always be careful what you say when using the Lord’s name.

When we were kids, I didn't even think about words like "gee whiz" being corruptions of Jesus. But as for the spam mail, I feel the same way about Facebook memes that tell you that if you don't type Amen or share or whatever that you aren't proving you love Jesus. These are horrible and it's like blackmail. I think if you commit emotional blackmail using His name, then it's using it in vain.

I agree with you there. I don't belong to Facebook so I haven't seen that.

People will use the name of Jesus and God if they think it will get them something.

It's so sad that people use God's name in disrespectful ways.

The traditional understanding of the verse by the rabbis has been in referrence to perjury or giving a false witness so someone using God's name to decieve in email etc., would be within it's context, using the name of God to mislead or misrepresent, and I agree, it would be a violation of that.
