Storm Chasers

Storm chasers are in pursuit of bad weather conditions, generally they will follow tornados. When I lived in Oklahoma they was a fellow who lived a few blocks from us who was a storm chaser and his vehicle was all sent up as a storm chasing vehicle. Some of the vehicles look like the picture where others are not as elebrate. It is a dangerous thing to be a storm chaser and some people have lost their lives. Do you think this is something you would like to do?

I don't understand why people put their lives in danger chasing these storms but I do believe the serious ones obtain useful information for people whose work involves studying these things.

41, I do not understand it either because a tornado will turn in a minute and head right for you.

If I were younger, yes, I would. I grew up in tornado country. That meant grabbing a transistor radio and sitting in the basement for most of the night. We were never hit, happily. Just once, though, I'd like to see the funnel though.

OH yes, how well I remember sitting under a table in the basement and having a transistor radio at hand.

@Marcyaz I remember some terrible thunderstorms and the power going out, but no twister ever came near us. Scared, curled up in a blanket, and my mother yelling at me to get away from the window.

@msiduri Yep you don't want to be near any windows because they will blow inwards and harm you.

Reminds me of the movie twister and the storm chasers there. I would never be a storm chaser.

Kind of does remind me of that movie also and I would not want to be a storm chaser either.

I do have fantasies of being one of those storm chasers - but perhaps because I've never experienced tornadoes. When I saw the movie about that, oh that looked plenty exciting, but I know there are great risks involved - even the most experienced can get hurt or worse. I wouldn't do it now - I have too much to lose.

It may seem fascinating but it is also dangerous. Glad to hear it is not something you would do.

I find it bad enough when bad weather follows me without provoking it - not my idea of a job

Such people are too passionate about what they are doing. They do deserve a lot of respect. Their contribution is immense to the environmental sciences. I have seen many movies about these storm chasers and I have always felt it interesting to go out hunting and chasing the storms. A very difficult task no doubt that definitely needs lots of guts and courage. Passion has to be the main driving source.
