Do you live in the same house for 20 years?

It seems that in my country, people are moving every few years. It is hard to find a person who stays in the same apartment for 20 years. I think that is part of city life, especially in a city like ours where constant renewal is in place. The government frequently tears down older apartment blocks, and let the residents move to new apartment blocks. The older apartment blocks were built in the 60s or 70s. These were smaller blocks of 12 stories. Many new apartment blocks are much taller, so it makes economical sense to tear down the shorter blocks, and build taller blocks. Even when the government is not tearing down the apartment blocks, many people are moving to new place after staying in their old place for 10 years.

Perhaps this is why I hardly see old buildings in Singapore. When we travelled in Singapore, I found that the buildings were new everywhere. This is amazing since in many cities there are still old and new buildings. I guess it is a good way because at least the people in Singapore live well. This may be different from Hong Kong. The poors live in very small house from old buildings. Sometimes you can't understand how a family can live in so small room together. In my city, it is normal for us to live in the same house for a long time because today it is too expensive to buy a house. The price is crazy expensive.

I think the government in Hong Kong does not take care of the people well. They do not have enough public housing to accommodate all the people. If the graduates cannot buy cheap apartment, then they are not likely to have babies. If Hong Kong starts to build public housing for the people every year, the poor will not feel poor.

@scheng1 This is why some people will have a baby later since they have to solve the house problem at first.

10 years is a reasonably long period of time. If this is your own house, it may be better for you to stay put. if not, try to buy a small house.

You are fortunate that the government does not acquire the land. Over here in Singapore, governments keep on acquiring the land to build road or MRT or whatever else. Most people make a profit after the government compensates them, and they can move to a new place at a very low price.
