Tulsi is its name here but I did not know that it is also called Holy basil. Holy it is for Hindus here. They worship it and every house will have it mounted on a platform right in front of their house. They go round it and perhaps say some prayers. We have many tusli plants in our garden. They self propagate. They come in two varieties black and green. Black is supposed to have several health properties. I add it while making a herbal chutney using other herbs that we have in our garden.

Basil is popular here in Greece, it is used a lot in cooking but also grown as a pot plant and placed on verandahs where people rub it in their hands and then enjoy the scent.

I always like to see the leaves hanging in doorways with chilies and limes.

@boiboing I think I have read about your Indian 'connections' in one of your posts or responses. Which part of India is your favourite?

@allknowing Not often but occasionally Indian restaurants might do it around festival times. I go to India on holiday every year.

the platform used is called thulasithara. there will oil lights in every eve with their prayers. And of course Tulasi is a herbal plant. Women like to wear it in their hair.
