Old Fashioned Chicken Pot Pie Supper

A pot full of pot pie (think "pie in a pot")

The pot pie I grew up with and what most people are familiar with today are two entirely different animals. The supper I attended at the Richwood Methodist Church Fellowship Hall served both kinds with the proceeds benefiting the building fund. If you're familiar with southern chicken and rolled dumplings or chicken and slippery noodles, then you already have an idea of what my kind of pot pie is. The dough is rolled out and sliced into strips or blocks which are then cooked in the chicken stock. The broth ends up thick, so it's not like chicken noodle soup. The chicken is served on the side. I did like this chicken because it was shredded and kept warm in chicken broth. Mom used to serve those naked chicken pieces that were cooked to create stock and I never got used to seeing them in their denuded state. In addition to the chicken and doughy noodles, there was also chicken pie with a crust (what people today call pot pie), mixed veggies (unfortunately, obviously frozen and unseasoned), tossed salad, cranberry orange relish, apple sauce and fresh rolls with butter. The cranberry relish was outstanding! There were also coffee options, sweet iced tea and hot water for hot tea; plus lemonade. Desserts were plentiful and mostly homemade. I had a pumpkin cheesecake, but really wish I had gone for thirds on the pot pie instead of something sweet. I love the stuff!! I couldn't get the image upload to work, so I have to use a link. Do you attend church suppers? What kinds are there where you live?

Chicken and dumplings is one of my favorite things during the cold winter months.

Are yours the drop kind or the roll and sliced kind? My mother liked drop dumplings, but our overall fave was the rolled dough. I only liked the dropped dumplings if they were small enough to soak through.

@jerzgirl I've had it both ways and love them both. I'm not too picky when it comes to chicken and dumplings.

The picture you show is the way my mom makes Chicken Pot Pie. Love it! Some people even call it Chicken and dumplings.

I do attend church suppers. On Prince Edward Island in the summer they have lobster suppers, how great is that. Our church has what we call an International Dinner, all the different nationalities in the parish serve their dishes and diners can try everything. Our local Methodist church has monthly suppers.

Now, THAT'S a supper I could really sink my teeth into!! We have fried oyster and ham suppers in our area, but they're usually held by local fire departments plus one Masonic Hall and one church on election day. Good stuff!!

Mom made meat pie with 2nd day beef stew, but she never made chicken pie. It was always Penn. Dutch style pot pie. I could eat it every day if I had it!
