The pot pie I grew up with and what most people are familiar with today are two entirely different animals. The supper I attended at the Richwood Methodist Church Fellowship Hall served both kinds with the proceeds benefiting the building fund.
If you're familiar with southern chicken and rolled dumplings or chicken and slippery noodles, then you already have an idea of what my kind of pot pie is. The dough is rolled out and sliced into strips or blocks which are then cooked in the chicken stock. The broth ends up thick, so it's not like chicken noodle soup. The chicken is served on the side. I did like this chicken because it was shredded and kept warm in chicken broth. Mom used to serve those naked chicken pieces that were cooked to create stock and I never got used to seeing them in their denuded state.
In addition to the chicken and doughy noodles, there was also chicken pie with a crust (what people today call pot pie), mixed veggies (unfortunately, obviously frozen and unseasoned), tossed salad, cranberry orange relish, apple sauce and fresh rolls with butter. The cranberry relish was outstanding!
There were also coffee options, sweet iced tea and hot water for hot tea; plus lemonade. Desserts were plentiful and mostly homemade. I had a pumpkin cheesecake, but really wish I had gone for thirds on the pot pie instead of something sweet. I love the stuff!!
I couldn't get the image upload to work, so I have to use a link.
Do you attend church suppers? What kinds are there where you live?

I do attend church suppers. On Prince Edward Island in the summer they have lobster suppers, how great is that. Our church has what we call an International Dinner, all the different nationalities in the parish serve their dishes and diners can try everything. Our local Methodist church has monthly suppers.
