I can understand if you have never heard of Christmas Island before, unless you are a Singaporean or an Australian.
A Singaporean should know about Christmas Island, since Christmas Island was a part of Singapore before Australia bought over about half a century ago.
Australians should know about this island, as Christmas Island is now part of Australia.
If my ancestors had decided to move from Singapore to Christmas Island years ago, I would be living in a charming place with 2000 others, and many more birds and animals.

That was way back before independence.
Christmas Island was part of British colony, and administered through Singapore administration.
Later on, Australia wanted Christmas Island, and British government asked Australia to pay a few million pounds to Singapore to compensate for the loss of income from the resources in Christmas Island.
