Safety First: What Would You Do?

What would you do if you were on an airplane, flying across the country and a passenger, a few rows up starts yelling threats? What would you do if you hear a loud explosion outside your home, in the middle of the night and you smell smoke? What would you do if you were waiting in a train station and someone yelled. "He's got a bomb!" What would you do if you worked in a 10th story office and you spotted smoke coming out of a corner office? There are many situations like this that happen all the time and most people have no idea what to do under the circumstances. These situations need to be discussed with your family members and a definite plan should be worked out so that everyone knows exactly what to do. Contact a local agency in your area and ASK what the best plan of action would be in a worst case scenario, for different types of emergency situations. Check with your local fire department for information brochures and learn what to do. Go online and search for information and then make sure you know what to do, that will be the safest course for you and your family. Sometimes, the people who get killed or injured are those who make bad decisions when something happens around them and they don't follow the best plan of action. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

Nope, I'd have to disagree. You can plan all you like but most people can't execute that plan in the heat of the moment. Also they can worry themselves sick over things that are statistically extremely unlikely to happen. So no, I won't be planning for any of those situations.

You definitely have a point. I don't worry myself sick over any of it, because we have no control over situations that I mentioned. I just feel that a little planning in some situations would be helpful.

@IreneVincent I have a colleague who can lie awake all night worrying about the earth being hit by a meteorite. I told her it's not going to happen and if it does there's no point worrying about it.

Its good to know your escape route but who knows what to do or how they will react. You can try to be prepared but when the chips fall we can do things we never thought we would or could? I remember all those Korean kids that drowned on the cruise ship because the ones in charge told them to stay where they were under the water line that someone would come for them and they waited to long.

It's true, we never know how we will react. I just think that we should have something in mind and then follow our own sense of what is safe to do.
