I had gone for some cooking classes where besides other things we were taught to make swiss rolls. I do turn out good dishes normally but somehow each time I tried to roll that sponge cake it would break in the middle messing up my effort. Making a Swiss Roll requires patience which I badly lack. But I can finish a good portion of it in no time (lol) Any experts here that are successful. What is the secret?

I don't know how you did it but the secret is to roll it when it's still warm, leave it to cool and then unroll it to fill and reroll.

That seems reasonable. Roll it back and then fill in. Thanks.

You need to learn Tennis first!! Then go for Swiss roll!!! LOL On a serious note, what I know is that you need to roll it as soon as you take it out of the oven, because at that time it will be most flexible and will roll up without much mess!! If even this doesn't help, then we need a true expert!!

Won't the filling melt if the cake is rolled when it is hot?

@Rationalwriter I think what @Boinboing has suggested could solve the problem. Thanks for your suggestions.

I did once make a chocolate yule log, which is really the festive equivalent, but that was over 50 years ago.

But you must have tasted it. It is a simple sponge cake with filling of cream with icing sugar. The sponge cake is just about 3/4" thick.
