Croatia: A Few Facts

United States

"Drago mi je sto smo se sreli." In Croatian, that means: "I am very glad to meet you." I think. I'm hoping that someone from Croatia will respond. I met a nice young man on a cruise ship a few years ago, from Croatia. He was part of the crew and worked in the Photo Shop. He was very friendly and he spoke perfect English. I decided to do some research on his country when I got back home and I wrote some things in one of my notebooks. I came across all these notebooks recently that I have kept for many years and decided that I could use some of this information for writing online. The capital of Croatia is Zagreb and the official language is Croatian. One interesting fact was that Croatia controls most of the land routes from western Europe to the Aegean Sea and the Turkish Straits. The Croats, along with Serbs and the Slovenes formed a kingdom that was known after 1929, as Yugoslavia. After World War II this kingdom became an independent communist state under Tito. In 1991, Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia, but it was four years of bitter fighting before the occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from the land, with the last Serb-held land being returned to Croatia in 1998, according to my research. If you live in Croatia, I would like to know more about your country. I have seen some photos and the country is so beautiful from what I've seen.

I saw some absolutely beautiful photos from Croatia on Instagram from Earthpix and I was fascinated. Then, I thought about the young man that I met on the cruise. I just decided to put the discussion out here and see if perhaps I could find him and/or at least find someone who could tell us more about Croatia.
