Got the shopping done!

We spent the weekend finishing up our Christmas shopping. We're totally done and it's not even December 1st.. that's awesome for us. Usually we're scraping at the end of the month to figure out how we're going to afford to finish shopping.
I will admit we put a good portion of the shopping on the credit card.. it wasn't much at first, only a couple hundred.. but then something unexpected happened...
We went shopping for phones for the twins. We got my daughter a new phone for her birthday last week and it's horrible. It's the worst piece of junk on the planet. My husband has already had to reset it twice.
They've been asking for iphones for a couple years now. My son has been wanting any sort of apple product, last year it was an ipod, this year he still wants the ipod or an iphone... but he knows that's pretty much not going to happen. These products are beyond expensive.
But hubby found a deal. If we put the twins on our Verizon plan we can add 2 iphone 5's for 99 cents each per phone. Granted we're paying full price for the extra lines and we'll have to up the amount of data we're getting so our bill will increase a good deal.. but the upfront cost is $2 plus tax to get the phones.
So we went down to the Verizon store to get that set up, and there was a problem with changing our account. Apparently Verizon finally realized we had an outstanding cellphone bill from a few years ago. Awhile back when we had Verizon things got tight and we let the phones get shut off. We ended up switching to another company for awhile, but last Christmas we went back to Verizon and they must have forgotten that we owed them money because they had no problem setting up the account for us.
But that bill finally caught up to us and it was a bit of a doozy... $800.
We put that on the credit card to be done with it and so we could add the phones to our line.
It feels good to have one of our larger bills taken care of... but now we have to focus on getting that credit card debt paid down...
On the plus side we don't have to spend anymore money on Christmas and the credit card is not charging interest for the month of December, so we've got all month to make as big of a dent in that bill as we can before it starts charging us interest on it.
How's your shopping coming along?

We bought my oldest an older version iphone... think it's a 4 (they're on 6 now). We bought it used and paid $60. We only paid $1 for each of the twins' phones. I would never pay full price for one. Hubby doesn't even want one, he prefers android... though the phone he likes is kind of expensive too.

@katsmeow1213 My sister got an old one and she loves it. But paying for the new ones is just crazy.

My shopping is done and it feels good. I usually spend about 200 on each of my sons. I have a few small kids to shop for but they are easy. I sell on ebay and usually use that money for Christmas. It really helps me to stay within my budget.

It feels great to be done. I've already started saving for next year. I started a CD with a low minimum deposit that I can add to over time. I've been putting in $5 each time I get paid which is every other week. I started it at the end of October so it will mature at that time next year and I can use it all for Christmas.

Phones - the family plan - ahhhh - something we will have to deal with in the next year!
That's great you're done with all the shopping - now you can just enjoy the rest of December without dealing with that. I aim to get done by next week - but I'm hoping to get the bulk of it done by the end of this week. I've got my list and ideas - now I just need to get 'em - but hopefully they will be on a bargain (that's the part that might slow me down).

Having the ideas and the money is half the battle. I had a few ideas and some money about a month ago and was able to find a few things for a great deal. I got my daughter a $90 pair of boots for $20 on black Friday!

@katsmeow1213 One of these years, I'm going to have to jump into those Black Friday deals. I never take advantage because I just don't want to deal with shopping on that particular day - but it seems like this year even Black Friday came somewhat early (so many stores were having those deals days before it seemed) - I'll just have to plan better for that day. Boots can be so expensive, so you got a great deal there.

I pretty much only buy for my kids... and perhaps a couple of their friends that exchange gifts with them, and a couple of the teachers and bus driver. I've got the teachers taken care of.. am trying to win gift cards at work for the bus driver and babysitter. As for the friends I'll just grab a stuffed animal or mug with hot chocolate or something cheap like that.

@katsmeow1213 It can be pretty easy to buy for young kids. They are usually happy with anything you give them.

Our kids are grown and they get cash, we find fun small items for under the tree. Congratulation on getting it done before December.

A lot of people seem to just give cash. We usually get some money from Aunt Doris at the holidays. Generally I spend it on finishing up the kids' shopping, but this year I'll put it all towards the credit card bill.

That's a good idea.
I've already started saving for next year. I am hoping to totally avoid using the card at all next year.
