Junkyards - Lands of Imagination

I fell in love with this photo when I saw it. It brought back memories that I have of all the junkyards we used to have in our area. You don't see them too often these days because too many people think they "detract" from the neighborhood when they actually do provide a service. They are either forced to close or they are forced to put up high "can't see what's there" fencing so that the delicate eyes of local residents, many new, aren't offended by the rust.
But, I saw them as almost a playground. No, I didn't actually play on the junk cars, but I would imagine what those cars were like when they were running and what kind of people drove them. I'd imagine what happened that caused them to have to be junked. If they were crashed, I'd wonder if the people riding in them were injured or worse. My mind was always at work.
I've bought many a car part from a junk yard. A lot of money can be saved by making use of a still-good part from a no-good car. And, when something can't be re-used, the metal can be salvaged to be re-used to make new items from the same metal.
We hear talk about conservation and recycling, yet these very useful arenas of recycling are all too often viewed as undesirable eyesores. It's a shame. For me, they were like museums that opened a window to the past.

I grew up in too nice neighborhoods to have junk yards. When I was about 10, the area just north of us hadn't been built up and there was an abandoned boxcar in the middle of the field, no rails, just a boxcar. However, I did buy a new/used front driver's seat for my Mazda GLC before I sold it, and the guy encouraged me to stick the gas cap in my pocket because I needed one of those too.
