The dogs in my house: Cujo

Cujo is the second oldest dog. He is actually my dog, but I didn't name him. He had been a puppy that the roomie's folks had kept because their grand daughter asked them to keep him. But then she never came to see him, and nobody played with him. Its a wonder he didn't grow up as feral as the two big dogs that he was in the yard with were. When he was 5, the roomie's father said he was going to take him to the pound, because the big dogs were beating him up. (And he realized that the grand daughter wasn't going to come because he had kept the dog.) At that point he might not have passed the tests to get him adopted from a shelter, so I said I'd take him. Cujo is now going on 14. He's beginning to have cataracts, so his vision is going. I think, despite how little he likes the youngest dog, he does use him as bit of a "seeing eye" dog. Because of the big dogs he had been penned with, he has some food issues, what I was afraid of when I had said I'd take him. Food issues can render an otherwise nice dog, unadoptable. He has gone off on Boe, the youngest dog, it hasn't been about the food since the first couple of times. Mostly Boe is trying to play, and play with Cujo's bed, and if Cujo is ON the bed... well, he's not happy. But while its been noisy, Cujo hasn't bitten him.

What kind of dog is Cujo? It does sound like he has some issues that are still with him from being left to fend for himself with the big dogs. My oldest dog Bella (dachshund) had food issues as well because she was left outside to fend for herself with much bigger dogs. It took several years but I was finally able to break her of that habit of being food aggressive.

His mother was half dachshund, half chihuahua and his father was half basenji and half mystery dog. He's isn't terribly food aggressive, but he does have some issues. He knew Zoe, the oldest dog, was the "boss" because she was here when he got here, but he also knows that Boe, the "new" dog, is below him in the pack order. He weighs about 20-25 pounds. The vets remarked he's always been grumpy, but he's not an overly friendly dog, because he wasn't well socialized as a puppy.

@ElicBxn It's really sad when someone has a pet and doesn't take proper care of them. Bella is grumpy at times too and doesn't always get along with adult dogs. That's why when we decided to get another dog, we had to get a puppy because she loves puppies. It also helped that we got another dachshund.

interesting that he is named Cujo like the name of a movie where cujo was a wild mean bad actor of a dog. Yours does not sound mean at all glad he was adopted by yo u. Otherwise he might have ended up liie so many dogs do in those shelters.e

He got named Cujo because he growled at the grand daughter as a tiny puppy. Yes, the girl liked Stephen King.
