It is my understanding one has to buy equipment and/or software to do this? I know one person who tried bitcoin mining and gave up after awhile. If there is indeed equipment and/or software that needs to be invested in, I'd definitely try buying used instead of new if possible.

Instead of directly mining, one can invest in websites that do the mining themselves.

that if we want to mine own, we must have the software and equipment. but if the cloud mining equipment we just ride on someone else already widely available on various websites . but I also do not understand it too much , because it's still a lot of questions in my head about this cloud mining .

Go for Hashocean.com or genesis-mining.com - they are quite reliable and safe.
