Window Shopping Therapeutic (NOT)

So I'd be bluntly honest that these days I am broke and starting to be depressed. So when my friend asked me today to accompany her to do some window shopping. I said yes because a lot of people say that it is very therapeutic and before I really quite enjoy just browsing what's on the shops. However, I'd have to say that window shopping has a paradoxical effect on me now. I don't feel less depressed. I actually feel more depressed and envious of the people shopping. I am not this kind of person before. I'm feeling like poverty had made me materialistic. The fact that it's Christmas season makes me more sad because I am a generous person by nature and I want to buy gifts for my friends but right now I'm just on a financial crisis. Oh well I got to suck it up.

I understand completely where you are coming from. I deal with this a lot for I don't have a job at the moment. There are many things I want for myself but I think maybe I wouldn't really want them IF I had the money. Kind of like a child acts when they can't have something they want. If I had the money, then maybe I wouldn't have that item on my mind. It's only on my mind because I like it but know I can't afford it. I hope that makes sense. But as for wanting to shop for my family and friends, THEN I get majorly depressed. People around me give me really good gifts and I struggle quite often to do the same but it isn't always that easy. So just like you I get very depressed. I am so sorry you are feeling depressed. Things will get better I swear. Just maybe sit down and think about what you are spending money on that you really don't need to be spending money on. Make some sacrifices here and then and watch the money start to rise. Also, speaking of presents. It isn't really necessary to buy people gifts. It can mean a lot more if you make them something.

Your post is very comforting. I am working part time at the moment and studying as well. I have to pay my tuition soon so yes I am broke. Today I bought a 5$ shirt. Which is quite a good deal. I feel like I'm going crazy if I don't buy even just one item. My friend bought a lot of stuffs and well I feel kind of envious but I have to live by my means. I'm just praying that I get some shifts in the next couple of days to survive. I think making gifts for people is a clever idea. I'll see whether my creativity will work. I really want to give my family and friends something nice for the holidays.

@flapiz I am glad you at least have a job to keep money coming in. That is very good. A $5 shirt is a sweet bargain! I understand what it is like to have a friend around who can afford what they want while you are standing there wishing you could be doing the same. I have a friend who always seems to have money for whatever she wants. Although she's more lucky than I am. Lives in a house rent free whereas I don't. Her parents paid for her studying whereas I have. Yeah I get a bit mad and yes envious that she can get everything she wants whereas I am struggling to get things I actually need! I am certain that your family and friends will be understanding if you do not buy them really expensive gifts but will love that you would make them something. It's more personal and sentimental when you make things.

@VivaLaDani13 Yeah it was a good bargain. Seeing that you're from Perth I assume you know Water Town. They sell cheap clothing there. I am a bit lucky at the moment I'm not paying any rent thank you for making me appreciate that. You are a good person wishing financial stability for both you and me.

You know what you can take it positively and decide to do something and purchase one of those clothes, I would have felt the same way if i went too

I did buy one piece of clothing and it was really very cheap. I was broke but I gave in. I'm thinking hey I deserve this. I just have to trust that God will provide. I just wish I had more money cause a lot of things are on sale specially because it's almost Christmas.

@Missmwngi Thank you for the comfort. I know I should not be too sad. Other people have worst problems than me. I should be happy for what I have.

I've never liked window shopping. Not because it makes me envious but I just find it pointless. I go shopping when I need to buy something and have the money to buy them. Otherwise I'd rather go to other places or stay home.

I think that's the rational thing to do. Staying at home is the most economical way to handle things. It just gets lonely and boring sometimes.

I find it hard to go shopping when I'm like that myself. Sometimes it's nice but I find that when I have no money, that's when I see lots of things I want..

Very true. When I got money I can't seem to find anything good enough to buy. But when I have no money the longing to buy something is amplified. It's quite frustrating.

@flapiz I'm exactly the same, although I am trying to save more at the minute so don't go shopping as much as I used to.

That's why I avoid shopping malls when I am broke. I feel the same .

I was avoiding it as well. If my friend hadn't asked me to accompany her I would have been fine. So that's why I was green with envy as she buys her prada and I buy my nada.
