I made a pair of coasters from guitar sound holes!

People who know me from Bubblews probably remember that I like to make coasters out of guitar sound holes. Now that I think about it, I've done a couple of posts here using response to these things as gifts in discussions about being appreciated or under-appreciated. Anyway, Collings guitars, of Austin TX, was kind enough to send me a bunch of the cut outs for free, and I stain them, coat them in satin polyurethane, and then attach felt bottoms to them using a hot glue gun. I'm all excited today because I just finished up another pair or coasters. For those interested, this particular pair was originally light spruce in color, but I stained them with Minwax Red Mahogany oil-based stain (two coats). For my background in this photo, I chose a dark walnut loudspeaker from the late 1960s that I had previously refinished using only Howard's Orange Oil--no stain. I find it interesting that the color of red mahogany stain is the best match for dark walnut that I've found so far. I sometimes use this stain when I'm trying to color match a repaired corner on a vintage loudspeaker with the original veneer.

Pretty easy to make, actually. But they require a lot of patience.

I am glad that you explained that you were referring the cut out pieces which created the holes because I was very confused about how you could make much from a hole.

I always wonder exactly how to explain that. I wish I could make stuff from thin air!

@TheHorse I wonder if you could make tiny ones from the holes in CDs to use in doll's houses.

I remember reading about you doing these on Bubblews. Do you sell them?

Very occasioanally, I'll sell a pair (I think I sold a pair to someone on Bubblews). But I mostly give them away to musician friends.

Martin Guitars of Nazareth PA has sent me some too, as did Larrivee Guitars, of Vancouver BC. Gibson snubbed me (frowny face emoticon).

@TheHorse That's awesome they sent you some. Too bad Gibson couldn't be just as generous.

Thanks! I've been making these for a few years now. My friends from Bubblews are probably tired of reading about them. But I think one person got inspired and made a couple of pairs for himself.

@Castlerock34 Thanks. I'm going to have to write Collings soon and ask if they'll send me some more raw sound holes. I'm running low!

I use making them as a form of meditation. It's pretty relaxing.
