I was going to use the technical definition of the word agoraphobia to help me describe what this word means, but when I looked it up I realized that there are a million different definitions of the word. So when people ask me what it means, I simple say, it's the fear of large places. But I think that's the most genetic thing I can say.
So let me take you into my world for a minute. I can leave my house. I can get in my car and drive anywhere you want.....on a side street or none busy streets. But if you want me to go anywhere from there then we have a problem. Let's take Wal-Mart for example. I might be able to go to the front door. I might even be able to go into the foyer, but any further then that and thats when the problems start. The panic attacks start to build. And I run back out the door. If I'm with someone I trust, I might be able to make it through the store, but there's so many variables that go along with it.
This is only the small example. To some this might sound silly. Some might even think they understand.
I've been this way since I was 18. In which I was housebound for the first 4 years at least. I couldn't even get as far as the sidewalk in front of my house. Now I'm able to drive anywhere you want me to drive, including out of town, but unless I'm with someone I trust, the car is as far as I go.
I've come a long was then I was 17 years ago, but this is something that can never be cured. Medications help. Therapy helps. Exposure therapy helps. And working everyday to get better helps.
This is only a peek into my world but it might explain some of my posts like why going to the mall was a success for me today. And how everyday can be a struggle...But staying positive is the best way to be!

@T_gray I had a breakdown some time back, few years ago now. I was really bad, hated leaving home. It took me for me for ever to go into a store like Walmart, i would like you get to the door then I would have to go. just could do it.
Ok I know it different in many ways but in some it no, I just didn't feel safe. When I finally got to going in the store I would be in and out as fast as I could and get back home.
It was one step at a time but I got there in the end.

I am slowly getting better with it. I have to be with some one when I go places. There are only a couple places I can go to alone and that is one gas station down the street and one grocery store down the street. But I can only go to the pharmacy in that store. I can't go anywhere else in that store by myself. it sucks sometimes

@kevin1877uk Yes, I understand. And at one point I would like to get there. Right now it is huge that I am even able to leave the house. At one point I wasn't even able to do that. And then I would it was baby steps from there. So eventually I will work on getting in the store alone

Suffered with it. Most of my interviews were blown away. I also lost some jobs. I find it harder communicate with people in real life. So I can tell you that this is just curse to have it. Takes a lot of time to get over. I personally think that it is not easy to get out of it.

Agoraphobia translates to "fear of the market place (agora)," or places where there will be lots of people. People with Social Phobia fear judgement of others. People with Agoraphobia apparently fear random panic attacks. I'm glad you can leave the house. Perhaps with "successive approximations" and a supportive friend (and some humor) you'll be able to make it all the way through the weird worlds of Walmart or Target without feeling anxiety. Sometimes those kinds of places make me feel like I'm in the "bad trip" scene in Knocked Up.
