Day 18 – Job Description
1 Chronicles 24
How would you like to work just two weeks out of the year and still get paid for the whole year?
David divided the duties of the house of the Lord between the twenty-four sons of Aaron – Eleazar and Ithamar. Each priest served for one week, and being there are forty-eight weeks in the Jewish calendar, that came out to twice a year. In so doing we have one of the key passages in scripture.
1 Chronicles 24:10 The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, (KJV)
Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. (KJV)
People have tried to pinpoint the birth of Jesus. In order to do so you need to know when Zacharias served in the temple. Since he was of the order of Abijah, that narrows down the date significantly. He would have served eight weeks into the year and again twenty-four weeks later or week thirty-two. The angel appeared to Mary when Elisabeth was six months pregnant. From these two dates you can easily narrow down the time of year when Jesus was born.
When we look at our jobs we rarely see the significance of the work we do, yet God does not do anything without a purpose.
In the case of the job duties of the priests, it would ultimately lead to the birth of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is called our priest and king. Through Zacharias we see the priestly connection, and through David the kingly connection.
What is your job description? Do not discount it as insignificant. God might have a purpose you never considered as you go about your daily routine.
Let’s pray: Father, help me know the significance of the work You gave me, and let me do my work to the best of my ability and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Every festival on the Jewish calendar has a purpose. There is one often overlooked, that has gotten some attention in recent years - Feast of Tabernacles or Booths. That one was to represent the time Israel was in the wilderness and God lived among them. That feast takes place in the fall of the year. When you take the two possible dates when Zacharias was in the tabernacle, you will discover the timing with the angel's announcement to Mary works out for that feast. With the Jewish calendar being 48 weeks, nothing has changed in regard to their calendar, the date for the feast is in the Jewish month Tishrei or September-October since all their months begin on the New Moon.

Scripture doesn't say. I'm going to hazard a guess and say they helped with other duties, not specific to attending to the tabernacle where the show bread and candlesticks were located. We know only the high priest attended to the holy of holies and only once a year.
