Misuse of a words meaning

Over time language and how we use it changes. This is going to happen there is little we can do to change that. l don't have a problem with change.
l don't expect times to stand still. What irks me a tiny bit is how some times people misuse a word. For example tobogan it is a sled. Yet people use the word in reference to a winter hat also known as a beanie.
Lately I have noticed that people use the term epic as meaning something spectacularly huge. IE: The party is going to epic don't miss it! I get it but what bugs me isn't so much even that people misuse the words in accordance with a dictionary. I am more bothered by the idea that when I use a word correctly by the dictionary meaning they look at me as if I'm some kind of idiot. Which now I'm beginning to wonder if they even realize that I'm using it correctly.
Does this happen to you? Do people give you strange looks when you use a word correctly? Do people you know frequently misuse words and think they are correct even if you prove it to them by showing them the dictionary.
I love when I show them and they act as if I'm showing them some made up crap in a magazine that is just for fun with nothing to support it. Someone once told me yeah but nobody uses that or even use the word how it's there anymore. When did the dictionary become outdated?

I introduced our son to the dictionary to help him with spelling&understanding the meaning of words. He gets mad when we correct him&his mom yells you will thank me later. You're welcome. His favorite is ight lol she tells him boy you're not a thug ight me one more time&I'll spank the word right out of you. It's not going to get you anywhere in life. I'm not one of your little street punk friends if you're talking to me you talk to me with respect no slang I went to college and got an education&raised you better. If you can't tell she is the strict one.

There are some words, people who are misusing them are more than those who're using them correctly. Some misuses spread so widely that the wrong meanings overwhelm the right ones.

I tell my son all the time if you aren't going to speak correctly then don't speak. Misusing words to be cool is not cute it makes you look like a moron and when you try to get a good job they will think you are not smart and you will possibly lose the job. If you aren't sure ask or look it up. Be a leader not a blind follower.

Eventually proper use of English will go out the window if we don't put our foot down with our children. We refuse to let that happen in our house. My wife tells them my house my rules you don't like it tough cookies. When you have your own house where you pay all the bills by yourself you can make all the rules and do whatever you want until then you're going to respect my rules in my house.
