Choosing gifts for the Holiday Season can be a joy and a distinct privilege for some. While to others, it could turn out to be an exhaustive exercise. Choosing an appropriate gift, requires uninterrupted time, a degree of thoughtfulness and keen interest in making the recipient feel important and happy. A ‘meaningful’ gift generally conveys the message to the recipient: “You are loved and cherished” Such gifts chosen with care and attention to details, is always appreciated and treasured- - -irrespective of its price. I always watch for hints.. I also watch stuff they have around their homes so i can chose something appropriate for that person. Its difficult to chose gifts for colleagues or people you don't know much about.

@sofssu Well, I too do the same more or less. For children and adults in the family, we can get good indication while talking and discussing with them. You are right: difficult to select gifts for those you do not know well at a personal level. In that case I would choose chocolates, perfume or house plants.

I agree, I bought my sister a coffee mug that says "This Grandma belongs to... and then the names of her 4 grandkids are on the cup. It's fantastic and I know she will flip when she sees it. I can't wait to give it to her.

I ask everyone would they would like. Or what they need and that is what I get them.

That would indeed be another good option @jstory07 However, I would prefer a surprise element to gifting.

I find it difficult to know what people would like if they don't live near, as I have no idea what they already have. So I usually send gift vouchers.

There are some people that are just really hard to buy for, like our parents, ugh every year it is quite the chore.

@Gabugs That is true if one lived int he same state or even city. OUrs are 15 hours away, although we talk by phone we never touch on what they want or need, they just say oh we are good, don't get us anything.

@mom210 Yes, I understand. Most parents say that. Also, at their age, its your presence, more than your presents that count. I know it since I'm a parent too. Just sharing.

@mom210 I beg to disagree my dear. You would surely know what your parents would like or need [that is if you have been keeping in touch/visiting them. You have given me idea for my next post- - -if I can manage that.

I like to find out generally what my family wants ... and that is what I buy. It makes my life much easier.

@Gabugs - I like to get surprise gifts, too, but it has gotten harder as the kids and grandkids have gotten older.

@deborahdiane I absolutely understand that view well. However, at certain times, I like to give them a 'surprise' gift. Of course with that, it could turn out to be a 'disappointment' at times.

@DeborahDiane You are so right. So now onwards, we are giving Cash/Gift Cards for them to buy whatever they want.

I think I'm pretty tuned into what people like. But I tend to put too much thought into my gifts that I sometimes take too long to decide - not to mention trying to find things that are at the right price. I normally don't like to buy those gift cards, but I will say more people seem to appreciate them - so thank goodness they have been life savers at times!

I spend a lot of tome trying to chose the perfect gift for each person, it is not the money it is how well the gift fits the person.

Many don't give 'expensive' gifts, but something with meaning. This seems to make the most sense.
