I'm old enough to remember the time when, as a young girl, I spent many hours, sometimes all day long, outside, playing with other kids. We played in the woods, down by the creek, up on the hill behind our town, sometimes five or more miles away from my house - clear across the river to the other side of town and NEVER do I ever remember at any time that I was afraid of being harmed by someone and NEVER do I remember either of my parents warning me about "strangers."
We played outside after dark for hours - hide and seek - kick the can. We had no cell phones or any way to call home. It was a small town and we always felt safe. And back then, we WERE safe.
But, now, I have a constant fear, not necessarily for myself because I try to be constantly aware of my surroundings when I am out and about. My car is always locked, even in my own driveway, and my doors at home are always locked., even though I do not live in a high crime area.
I pay attention to where my car is parked and I actually had a Security Guard walk me to my car when I went shopping at a Mall, because I felt that I was being targeted by some young men who looked like they could do me harm.
Now I won't even go to the Mall at night.
But, I am mostly concerned about my grand children and my great grandchildren., Most of the time my grown children think I'm paranoid. But I believe that it's a combination of my age and being more aware of my own mortality and understanding what a dangerous world this really is.
I hope you are safe wherever you live. Just always be aware that there are persons who may want to harm you, so always travel in groups.
Just recently, a young college student here in Virginia, was murdered. She was alone on the street, walking back to her dormitory. And she had been drinking and totally not aware of her surroundings, it was reported.
What a sad end for a bright young student. Be careful wherever you go.
