On the Carrao River, in Venezuela, you will find Angel Falls at 3,212 feet, (with the longest single drop at 2,648 feet.) I read that the person who is actually credited with "discovering" the falls was named James Angel, although explorers had spotted it, perhaps as early as 1594. James Angel, was prospecting for gold when he landed his small airplane on a plateau above the falls. He was unable to take off again, because the airplane was bogged down, so he had a LONG walk back out of the area. However, he announced that he had discovered the waterfalls, the tallest in the world, almost 15 times as tall as Niagara Falls on the U.S. and Canada border. And so, consequently, the falls were named after him. James Angel died in 1956, but his airplane was not recovered until 1970 and it can now be seen on display at Ciudad Bolivar Airport. Have you ever seen it? I thought this was an interesting story.

No this is the first time I've heard about it. Interesting story. The falls are spectacular, the person interesting and the plane that took a nose dive into the mud was called a Flamingo that weighed about 3,000 lbs empty but had a powerful engine of around 500 hp.
