If Your Country Goes to War, Should You Be Forced into Service (Conscripted)

Do you believe in conscription (having to go to war if you´re in the right age bracket & your health is ok) in the case of a war? Also, having to do a year or 2 in the army after you finish education is mandatory in many countries. Does this build character or should people be able to choose whether or not to fight?

No one should be forced to serve. It is ridiculous to hold a draft and irresponsible to force people who are not mature or prepared enough to go to war.

No one should fight for something they don't believe in.

As a 22 year old who wants to volunteer to joined the territorial Army(British Army reserves, only fitness currently preventing me) I’d be in favour of national service in these times. This era, more than any other needs it. Those who are abusive will be on the receiving end; many won’t be able to handle it, but they’ll have no choice and they‘ll be coming out the other side more in control and more civil and will be beneficial to the community as a whole rather than a hindrance. It will instil confidence, pride a sense of nationality. It could go a long way to solving many of the social issues countries such as American and England face, you could even argue it would go a long way to preventing home-born terrorists. The only downside to the army at this particular moment is that you can’t pick your wars and we’re currently fighting a war that isn’t about the people.
Although I do hope in more than a general sense that there won’t ever be a war like WWI/II, many people will wave a flag, have a flag outside their home on their car, but few will fight for it.

I see your point, but I don't agree with it.
I understand why you would think that for people who have anti social tendencies but I think it really violates a persons rights. I don't agree with much of the stuff that my country does, I am not proud to be British, I am rather ashamed at the moment actually. I do not agree with violence for religious reasons. I know it's selfish, but I really am thinking about this in terms of how it would have effected me. I'm 22, I am just finishing my masters degree, I have a few psychological problems (panic disorder among others) and some physical problems to. I would not be physically or mentally able to cope with national service. And if i had gone at 18 to do national service I would be even further away from my PhD than I am now.

I see your point completely. I guess really my view is mainly towards anti-social behaviour, and challenges within that Britain faces.
Also well done on achieving the PhD.

That's it, my tired eyes failed to scroll upwards when I remembered the educational factor! :)
Have you ever watched Bad Lads Army? I usually try to avoid anything that ITV puts out, and I don't watch every episode, usually first and last, but the change from how they were in the start seems remarkable, I often wonder what they've returned to do.

I am not sure. I mean on one hand I would like to say that you should want to fight for your country and since you are living there you should have to have a tour of duty.... on the other hand, those that do not want to would not do well with it in he first place.... It is hard for me to givea specific answer.

No I don`t believe in that. We have enough people in our country that are willing to go into tha military that they shouldn`t have to do that.

I am against conscription. i would rather die than fight in a war because it is against my ethics and my religious beliefs. And i don't think anyone should be forced into fighting a war. What if you don't agree with the reason for going to war? Or if you support the other side?

I think it should be a choice. Because then the people really want to be there so they put a full effort into the service etc... But sometimes there is nothing else a country can do because enlistments are going down because of the war

u should not be forced by any government 2 fight .
If u feel that the war is necessary 4 the nation then u should fight.
Its good if u join the army, it imparts a degree of dicipline and responsiblity in u , but it should not be made madatory
