I am still making the small Christmas trees for tomorrow's orphanage visit. I have done the trees, and I asked my son to help me to tie the straps. Before tying the straps to the trees, I asked my little girl to match the trees with the straps, according to their colors. They are made of 12 different colors. She really enjoyed matching the colors. I like to involve the children in working, as they are always happy to help, and it's always fun for them. Moreover, it's always a learning opportunity for them. Image: My little girl is matching the trees and straps

Simple tasks like that are excellent for a child's learning because they become thoroughly involved and concentrate.

I think this is excellent. I always try and encourage children to be creative and help. Children love crafts and especially if you are there doing them at the same time. This is wonderful you daughter loves to help you and also your son. Keep it up it is perfect for them to learn many different skills with their hands.

Thanks. I think kids generally like to help, especially the parents. They feel good by helping as well. I was just telling my husband, it takes patience to encourage the children to help and to be creative as well. They always have their own idea, so they would like to follow their ways of doing things, but not mine. As I'd like them to be creative, I shouldn't restrict them to follow my way, even though I like it my way. But of course, it'd be good for them as long as it's not breaking the rules, they are free to do whatever they want to.

@poehere I understand that. Sometimes when I really want it my way, I'd do the same. I just told my children frankly, this is my project and I'd like it my way. I also respect when they do the same. I read about The Horse, and yes, it's really nice of him to guide the child to make the mini Christmas trees.

@kaka135 I can understand if this is your project and you are making this to give to people. Like the tree you're making here. But when it comes to other stuff that you want it your way bu you want there help do what I did when my daughter was young. I worked on the project together but she made hers and I made mine. This too was a lot of fun. I read here about The Horse and how he taught a young boy how to make his mini Christmas trees. It was wonderful because the child doesn't have a very long attention span and the child had a wonderful time making this and following right along. In this The Horse made his and the child made theirs and it worked out so well.

Yes, I always tell we actually do not need to buy toys anymore, as the children can find toys everywhere in the house, and everything can be educational tool as well. Moreover, they are helping me with real work which make them even happier!

@kaka135 When kids find a purpose in learning, the learning will more likely stick with them. I agree they enjoy helping with real work.

Two good helpers! Actually my elder son did more work, as he was tying the straps.

@AbbyGreenhill I will not let that happen. We do not use the reward system at home.

Yes, I always like to do that, though sometimes it might take longer time and more patient to get the work done, I believe it's good in the long run, for them and for me.

What a sweet baby. I miss my babies, they are all adults, I still love them but just not the same.

Thanks! I think I can understand that. The love towards the young child or baby is just slightly different. My 7 year old son is just not like a baby anymore, though I still love him very much. I always remind myself to seize the moments now, as children grow up very fast, and I am sure I will miss these moments when they become adults.

haha, he seems so serious at his task. Perhaps he thinks that he can save the world, and brings happiness to the world by doing this task well. I hope that he will pay the same attention to his homework.

She is always like this. I don't think she thinks that, as she might still not understand the meaning of saving the world. Actually I always think kids are very serious in doing work or playing, when they are interested in it. I always try not to disturb them as they look so concentrating.

That was a great learning opportunity that you took advantage of. Kids learn a lot when the activity goes along with something you're doing in daily life.

Yes, this is also one of the reasons I decided to take care of them by myself. Not only because of the bonding, but also I can let them have more "hands-on work" to do at home which is good for them.

My niece has been making things for one of the nursing homes for the elderly in the area. I think they pick a different place each year. This year they baked enough cookies to give each resident two cookies in a little gift bag and all five kids go with their parents to deliver them to each one in their rooms. It's great to teach the children to care for those less fortunate in whatever way we can.

That's really great! We are thinking of doing this every year, or at least when possible. Baking cookies is great! It'd be nice if I know how to bake gingerbread man, I think it'd be fun for the kids to eat the gingerbread man. Perhaps I should start learning how to bake, then next year we can prepare some cookies or even gingerbread man for the kids. Yes, I think it's good to teach the children to care for others, and let them learn to be grateful.
