Kids sure are expensive! And keeping them warn is a huge expense! Thankfully it hasn't been really cold yet this winter. Normally by now we've already been hit with a few feet of snow, and I'm stuck scrambling to gather up enough gear to keep the kids warm. I have 5 kids and a small budget, so it's not easy to keep them in coats, hats, gloves, boots, snowpants and scarves every winter. Yesterday was pretty cold, and the kids have all been sick, and it dawned on me that the younger boys don't really have any good hats and gloves. The hats are scattered about the house so the kids can never find one in the morning when they need one. I did buy them some cheapo gloves a few months back, but they've already gone missing. We were out and about today and I decided to look for hats and gloves. The first place we stopped at had nice sets of hats and gloves together, and the price was reasonable, but the hats didn't fit my boys as they were for smaller kids. But the gloves were really good. It got me thinking how we always get really cheap gloves for the kids that are really thin and don't really keep their hands warm when it gets really cold out. So off we went to another store that had lots of choices for hats and gloves. We got really thick hats and gloves that will be great for playing in the snow and keeping the boys warm... problem is we spent a ton of money! We didn't even realize until we got to the register to pay for it all how much we really spent. $60 on 2 hats and 2 pair of gloves... each piece was $15! But the boys will definitely stay warm this winter... I just hope they don't lose the gloves this time! Whats the most you've ever spent on hats or gloves?

I try to not spend more than $10 for a hat, scarf, and gloves set. And that is usually at the sale price. I have a hooded scarf that I made for myself and I really like it. I have some yarn that I can make another one with. I have a hat that I made with bulky yarn and doubled the yarn to make it thicker. It's going to be nice and warm for the winter. As far as gloves, I have a pair or two that are floating around here somewhere. I need to make a pair of mitts to go with the hat. I have enough yarn to do that.

@katsmeow1213 I have been knitting a hat on double-pointed needles. Now those I don't have the patience for. I'll knit hats on circular needles after I'm done with the current one.

I wish I could knit well. I don't have the patience for it.

Wow that is a lot for hats and gloves. It's been so long since my kids were little that I can't remember how much I spent.

The cost was a big excessive. I could have found similar products for $5-$10 that would have worked just as well, but they liked the Batman hats and gloves which were a bit more expensive. If it means they'll take better care of them then it was worth the cost. The less expensive ones would probably be lost by tomorrow.

I think i spent that much on gloves before too. I need a new pair before it gets really cold here just haven't found any yet. I will look the next time I go shopping though. I have a pair but their not really that warm

The cheap ones just don't hold up, so I'm not really upset at the money we spent as long as they last.

Is buying after the season an option for you? I find that it's a lot less expensive to buy ahead of time and store things, but I've been lucky in that my kids' sizes have been pretty consistently predictable so far. Getting stuff on clearance means that I can stretch that part of my budget a lot further than it would go otherwise. I think the most I've spent on a single set was about $10. We get mild winters here, so the thin gloves tend to work all right for the most part. There are very few days that the temperature dips low enough that something heavier would be necessary.

Money has been very tight in the past so things don't normally get purchased until they're a necessity, and then I find the cheapest option which isn't always the best option. We get below 0 here so we definitely need to bundle up in the winter!
