* UPDATE!! * Got some great feedback on post about getting a rice cooker. Thanks so much! Bought a crock pot instead. Here's my story: Received a gift card for a local department store last year and never used it. Couldn't decide what to buy for me. A year later, finally decided to go into the store and although my mind was set on the rice cooker, it wasn't final. In the end, bought a crock pot (slow cooker). Why? My cooking style and the kind of food we eat in our house is such that a crock pot is much more practical. Besides that, there are recipes on the Internet for cooking rice in a slow cooker. Scratch one gift off my wish list. YAY! Anybody got a favorite slow cooker recipe? (Doesn't have to be rice. )
Have cooked rice for years. Admit that in my younger days, my pots of rice used to come out gummy. But over the years my final pots have gotten much better...

It amazes me how many people say they use rice cookers. My husband insists that I just don't know how to cook rice. On TV, famous chef Martha Stewart showed about 5 ways to cook rice and then she said the easiest way is probably just to use a rice cooker. Lots of TV chefs recommend rice cookers. I think my husband is just being stubborn.

Will probably cook red beans or black beans in mine. Usually buy canned beans. But it's cheaper if buy them dried and cook them yourself.

@cmoneyspinner A crock pot is a great place to cook a roast as well, so tender.

I once won a slow cooker at a raffle but I don't know how to use it and now I don't even know where I've put that appliance. I didn't know that you can cook rice in a slow cooker. I just use a rice cooker.

I have found that the best uses for slow cookers is cooking dried beans or legumes; and also slow cooking meats. For example, if you have a tough cut – you put it in the pot in the morning and by the end of the day, it should be tender. You can always lift it out of the crock pot and finish it off in the oven. Going to be adventurous and try cooking rice in the slow cooker one of these days. I really like beans and rice.

I think a crockpot is more useful.
