It was a wild and crazy night here in the South

No, it wasn't due to partying or anything good like that. It was Mother Nature in a really bad mood.
There were several tornadoes in south west Tennessee and north west Mississippi with several deaths and they are still looking for unaccounted for people. For us here in East Tennessee we were warned all day that we would be on the fringes of the really bad stuff, but not to rule out a tornado.
Around 11 PM we were put under a tornado warning. Since I would not have been able to sleep I stayed up to listen to the weather radio if/when TV went out, which it did several times.
Thank goodness the tornado watch was removed about 2 am, but that wasn't the end of it. A line of severe thunderstorms came through that even my husband couldn't sleep through.....rain rain and more rain pounding us.
All was quiet around 3 am and I went to bed, but my nerves were still on edge and I had a hard time falling asleep then 6 am Ruby woke us up. So, a long trying night with little sleep - should make for an interesting Christmas Eve.

Look like Mother Nature has a different idea of Christmas gifts to all of you there.
I just wonder how the nurses, doctors, and other workers are going to get home in this kind of weather.
If they cannot get home, and have enough rest, they would find it hard to get to work when their shifts start again.

I guess those workers may have plans in place, since they never know what will happen.

I have never seen a tornado close up but they sound horrifying. Is I understand it there is hardly any time to baton down the hatches when they strike.

If you know a strong line of storms is approaching in a few hours you need to get ready then. I get out my weather radio, regular radio, cell phone, dog's leash, purse, etc....just in case. We had tornadoes (5) a few miles from us several years ago - the destruction was horrible and 9 lives lost just in that county....I have learned too much about tornadoes unfortunately.

@AbbyGreenhill Part of the problem is that if they hit your house they can simply rip it apart.

@pgiblett I know what happens I've seen the destruction. But I have a better chance of not being killed if I prepare and get to the basement.

It is definitely a weird Christmas Eve for sure. We had heavy rain here in NC through the night. Our power at work never went off, which was good. I'm sorry to hear about the deaths due to the tornadoes. Quite crazy weather.

@AbbyGreenhill Provided it is just the rain, I am fine by it. We did have some thunder, but it was the torrential rain I heard the most.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The wind is what I worry about - but all looks normal out there now, nothing blown down or over.

At 3 am is about when they got here in Central Alabama, I woke and stayed up till six am, man was that rain hard! We only had minimal thunder but it was enough to keep me awake too.

I think the noise is almost as bad as the wind. I'm glad we have a very solid home!

We had some bad storms in Illinois as well. Thunder and lightening.

The line went from the south to the north - I think there was a tornado in IL wasn't there?

This was a winter tornado pattern very similar to what we get in spring....once a year is too much, but twice is way tooooo much.

I should be asleep on my feet in about two hours. I hope I get the cake out of the oven before that happens.

Please be safe. Prayers and blessings to everyone who has been affected by these freak tornados. Maybe you can take a nap this afternoon and face this eve refreshed. *be well*

I think if I sit in front of the tv later I would probably fall asleep - which I plan on doing!
