If you want good luck in 2016 here's what you have to do....

Of course you want good luck, who doesn't?! The Southern tradition is that in order to have good luck in the new year you have to eat Black Eyed Peas on New Year's Day. Don't forget, I'am a Yankee transplant, so the best I can muster up is Bush's Black Eyed Peas in a can. I don't do pork or whatever else people put in the peas. I'm a purist anyway! I just have one problem....just because I have the peas in the cabinet doesn't mean I'll remember to serve them on Friday! I need a reminder system because I don't want to cheat myself out of good luck all year long! Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Black_eyed_peas_(16167751712).jpg

We had a tradition here in England which was still popular when I was a child, but now seems to have been forgotten. Somebody would leave the house before midnight and return after midnight when the New Year had arrived carrying a piece of coal and some bread. This signified that the household would have heat and food throughout they year.

@AbbyGreenhill Since coal fires are virtually non existent here nowadays the tradition gradually ceased over the years.

I did not know that! But my wife always cook noodles (we call it pansit) on Christmas, New Year (January 1), and birthdays! Eating noodles gives long life!

Here in Italy we are supposed to eat lentils which come close I guess. I loe them and eat them not only at the end of the year but throughout it too. Pushing my luck a bit?

Lentils are probably cousins to the peas! I like lentils better than the peas.

Most of the 14 years we've been in the south I buy the peas and forget to eat them.

Make sure there is a dime in the pot as the person who gets the dime will have extra good luck.
