WHY THE SYMBOL $ IS USED FOR DOLLAR?
The explanation is that the Spaniards, who first colonized America used a dollar called “a piece of eight” as it was worth 8 reals. The symbol for this coin is said to have been /8/. The lines on each side of 8, serving to distinguish it from an ordinary arithmetical 8. Later, the two lines were drawn through the figure 8 and later it was altered into $.
Another explanation traces the symbol back to the ‘Pillars of Hercules’, the arms of Cadiz, in Spain adopted by Charles the Fifth of Spain and stamped on ‘Pillar Pieces’ which were exported to America. The two pillars of the design were joined by a scroll turned around them.
Another explanation is that 8 being the number associated with the planet Saturn in Numerology who makes or mars the happenings necessitated to contain the effect of Saturn in any business transaction undertaken by the Government. So he has to be fixed by any means. The way found was /8/. Thus, Saturn was fixed between two slanted lines and it was presumed that the resulting effect would be ‘good only’.
Of course, We all know, the whole world knows what U.S and other countries are today.
