A Hawk Came To Visit

Earlier this evening I was reading a post about eagles. I commented on how I love seeing birds of prey. In my area there is now a bald eagle living on the river I live next too. I occasionally see him fly by. I also mentioned how just today while out doing my errands I saw 3 red tailed hawks. The author of the post TR Bergstrom said that he had never seen a lot of hawks. I told him about the hawk in my tree one day. One day about 2 years ago I was in my living room when I saw a red tailed hawk fly into my pine tree in my front yard. I grabbed my camera and went out the back door so as not to scare the hawk away. I crept to within about 20 feet of the hawk and snapped my camera like crazy. He actually looked down at me while I was taking his picture. He sat there for at least 10 minutes letting me take shot after shot before he flew away. I was happy and more than a little shocked. Hope you like my shot, wish I could post more than one. I have about 40 of them. Click on the photo and scroll down, look at those claws.

@fishtiger58 he really is looking at you, isn't he? I think I like this one better than the one on the post, though they are both great.

@jaboUK He looked right down at me. Why he didn't fly away I don't know. Maybe he decided I was of no harm. Whatever it was I was thrilled to get this close with my camera in hand.

Great shot! I see a lot of red tailed hawks here in my neighborhood. But I've never gotten that close.

@fishtiger58 Very cool. I sense a mutual understanding with hawks. We're too big for them to eat. And they know somehow we're not after them.

@TheHorse That could very well be. He sure didn't seem troubled by my presence and I got some great shots of him.

I just knew by the time I got to my front yard he would be gone. Imagine my surprise when he just sat there and let me get at least 40 shots before he flew away.

That is a great shot. We have a lot of hawks here in the summer. Now we have the Snowy Owls. My husband took the shot that is my Avatar. The one near our yard this winter is much more white. Apparently the very white ones are males and the ones with specks of brown are female.

I'm so jealous. We hear owls when out camping but haven't see any in our area. Owls are my favorite bird.

@fishtiger58 Snowy owls hunt in the daytime, and they stay in one area all winter. So, we see them daily in the winter.

@paigea wow I would love to see them all the time like that. I saw one once is central Illinois while I was out fishing. It was thrilling for me to see.
