All these years I thought the Postal Serice's Motto was something to the effect of:
Neither snow, nor rain, nor sleet shall keep us from delivering the mail. After looking it up, I find that not only did I not have it verbatim, but it was never the motto of the Postal Service.
Yesterday, after we got dumped on by the storm system that came up from Texas, we had about four inches of snow topped by ice. We took time to use the snow blower and clean off the driveway and sidewalks. I also shoveled the porch, steps and a portion of the ramp. The snow was so heavy that I didn't do the whole ramp yesterday.
We didn't get any mail, and my husband thought it was because I didn't shovel the whole ramp. I told him that wouldn't stop them because they've come through before we've even shoveled at all in the past, and I thought they would because of that slogan.
I found out this morning, when the mail was delivered, that when roads are not plowed they are told to refrain from going down them. Our mail lady did check again when she finished her route to see if our roads were finally plowed, but because they were not, she didn't chance it. Their trucks are quite light and would get stuck very easily.
Makes sense to me.
Did those of you living in the US realize that the Postal Service didn't have this for their motto? I think the reason many of us think this way is because one office put something similar to that on their building after it was built.

I know, right? At least they are more considerate that their drivers don't get stuck in the snow/ice for hours on end with our mail, but I've not been too concerned these past several years since my husband can't shovel any more, for i thought they'd figure out a way through the snow even if we'd not made it outside yet to clear a path.

I honestly don't know where I heard it, plus I thought it was a bit different than the actual saying goes.

A few years ago the snow was so bad that our road got narrow and they couldn't reach our mail box so for weeks we had to pick it up down town. I thought it was their motto too!!

I'd have assumed it with floods, hurricanes, tornadoes possibly, and severe blizzards, but it's not something we think about all that often I guess. It makes sense to not drive when the roads aren't cleared. Otherwise, they'd be paying for a lot of road service.
