She is only 9 and she's already writing text talk

I noticed this morning before going to bed that my niece had a note on one of her toys. It was written in short hand, or rather text talk. Words like "People" were shortened to "ppl" and "pls" was shortened to "please."
I think she is still learning how to spell some things, and I know reading was difficult for her in school last year. It's not a matter of not being able to, it's a matter of not wanting to.
I was a bit disheartened to see the shortened words as I imagine she thinks these are the way things are spelled. It also gives me pause as how she is seeing these words? I hope it's only on the minecraft videos she likes to watch.
I know some of the things she's interested in and have bought her books on the subject in the past. I guess it's time for me to do so again. Not that she doesn't have tons of books at home, but hopefully a new book about something she loves will make her want to read more.
What is going on with the youth of today? There head is always in an electronic.

I grew up with those types of consoles myself. It was always regulated as well, we couldn't spend forever on it.

I wasn't able to ask her as she was gone by the time I woke up. I wanted to find out if she thought that was actually HOW you spell those words.
It makes me sad as usually the women in this family love to read.

not only youth I have read some papers from university students who still can't write and the text language is creeping into these so called academic papers as well. It is just terrible.

Text talk was starting when I was in high school but even so we would have gotten a big fat F on our paper. It's sad and it will destroy the english language!

Oh do not get me started on the schools. They have a very backward way of doing things. I don't know what is going on with our educational system.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I agree schools today are not like they used to be and all they are going to do is screw up the future generations more than they already are. I hate that they don't have books anymore. first graders being told to start thinking about college. How about we focus on teaching them how to read and write first before overloading their tiny brains with college which these days seems to be another pointless money pit where people can't afford to go and when they find a way they get a degree only to come out with no job and in tremendous debt for many years. smh its just one giant mess.

It's my niece so I really have no say. When she's here I have more forthwith but then I almost always get overruled by my own elders.
My sister and brother in law know nothing about technology, they don't even know what she does on the tablet I am sure. That's a whole other subject altogether though.
This is an adult style tablet, not one of the Nuby type things. She plays games, watches youtube, nothing really educational on it.

@lokisdad I Wasn't aware there was a kid safe youtube app. I will have to get her tablet the next time she is here and put that on for her. I don't thin I mentioned this but I was helping her with her tablet once and I saw a very naughty in nature app on! I confronted her about it and she said she didn't know it was there. I imagine it was added on with an app at some point. I deleted it and searched through her tablet for others like it.
Told her mom but "Oh she doesn't know what that is." ugh.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That makes it hard when not all the adults are on the same page. However you seem to be tech savvy take the tablet and put parental control locks on. Download kidsyoutube it only shows child appropriate things. Good luck.

I've bought her minecraft books in the past. She tells me she likes vampire books as well. She's always on her tablet, it's sad really.

English is a difficult language to write and the spelling rules erratic. Could she be dyslexic?

I don't think so. I've not seen anything she has written that had words with letters in the wrong order. I wish I had thought to take a picture of it.
