dogs and shoes

I wonder why most of dogs have a problem with chewing shoes. my parents used to have a dog that we kept outside and the fact is that if we forgot a pair of shoes/slippers outside he would steal it and play with it and hide it wherever he felt like.

Once I visited my friend, and her dog started to chew on the sling of my handbag.
That sling was made of rubber, and the dog really had a happy time chewing it.
The sling was still usable, but the dog bites were visible too.
My friend wanted to beat her dog, but I did not mind, so the dog was saved!
