Started the New Year Off with a Bent Fender

I have been seeing the same buck walking across the road late into the night for several weeks now. I was just talking about it yesterday and heading through that area 5 mph slower just in case it was around. A car passed me with its high beams on, blinding me a little, and there was a car in front of me farther up so I didn't have my high beams on.
As my vision was trying to adjust back to the darkness I saw deer legs not more than 10 yards to the side. I quickly slammed on my brakes and veered out into the other lane (no one was coming) to make sure the deer didn't jump into my way. However, the deer jumped back and looked like it was going to retreat, then changed direction and charged the car, hitting it and falling over flopping. I then drove off in case it tried something else.
Fortunately the damage is isolated to a bent fender and left the hood and other metal piece completely untouched. It's frustrating because I was being careful and it hit me. The deer was not there when I went through later on.
While talking to others they were convinced that the deer was diving behind the headlights, since my car is black it thought there was nothing there. It makes sense, but what a stupid animal. There were no other cars on the road behind me, it could have waited just as easily... but if they were smart there wouldn't be so many dead on the side of the road to begin with.
It's a frustrating start to what I hoped would be a great year.

Pretty much. The deer could have kept going away from the car but turned around and dove at me. I know they are animals, but they really don't think at all.

It probably broke its leg. It mangled that forward part of my fender. And I did see it flopping on the ground trying to get up. It's just hard to believe it went from a standstill to a dash that resulted in that damage in 10 feet of space.

i knew your car was new, so that was my first thought.
it was strange to read that the deer 'charged' you. i thought they weren't aggressive.

I was fairly upset that the deer was an idiot, but other than that I'm fine.

@pgntwo Well it will need to be replaced. It's not a dent so much as crumpled metal.

I didn't really want to repair the car already. I only bought it 3 weeks ago. -sigh- Hard to start the year with additional expenses when all I was doing was driving carefully.

@DianneN I was at the Insurance place yesterday and apparently there were three other people there about deer strikes. I guess the deer are feisty.
