Day 21 – Bad Counsel 2 Chronicles 22 Throughout the course of our lives we seek the counsel and wisdom of those older and wiser than us in the many situations of our lives. Our first counselors are our parents, then our teachers, and then our employers. When problems arise we tend to seek out those who helped us in the past, but not all advice is good advice. Ahaziah was the next king of Judah and he did evil in God’s sight. Ahaziah’s counselor was his mother, Athaliah, the daughter of King Ahab, and she counseled him against the law of God. He also sought out other counselors who also followed the ways of Ahab, king of Israel. In every situation he sought their counsel and God determined evil against Ahaziah because he followed the ways of Israel. Jehu son of Nimshi was anointed as the next king of Israel for one purpose – to destroy the house of Ahab, which included Ahaziah, being king Ahab’s grandson. When Athaliah saw her son was dead, she took matters in her hands and killed all the sons of Ahaziah and took over the kingdom, however, one son was saved by Jehoshabeath, daughter of Jehoshaphat and sister of Ahaziah, and hidden with the priests of Judah. Bad counsel will lead to events in our lives that will cause our destruction as it did to Ahaziah. We need to consider our ways and seek after God, and God will bless us. Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. (KJV) Ahaziah died because his ways were not righteous but ungodly, following after all the ways of the kings of Israel. The same will be your end if you walk in the ways of ungodly people. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for providing Godly counselors for me who teach me Your ways and counsel me on what You desire of those who look to You. Help me seek You in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 2 January 2016 by Valerie Jean Routhieaux All scripture is King James Version, edited by me into common English. Image courtesy of Pixabay
