Why Is My Laptop Being Stubborn?

I had my headphones plugged into my laptop for a few days so I could watch YouTube videos and such without disturbing my boyfriend while he watched TV or played his video games. He is not here at the moment, so I was going to play some music on my laptop without the headphones in but I came across a problem. Sound is not coming out of my laptop's speakers and on the volume control, it shows that my headphones are still plugged in! It says: "Headphones (High Definition Audio Device)" However, my headphones are not plugged in. It seems that my laptop is confused. How do I correct this? This has never happened before, I have always been able to switch from headphones to speakers by simply unplugging my headphones!

Yes, if I plug my headphones in I can hear through them but when I unplug them the sound doesn't start coming from the laptop speakers like it normally does.
