Saudi Arabia, Iran, the Middle East and Islam

As most of you know, Saudi Arabia has executed a prominent Shia Cleric causing one more uproar in the Middle East, like we need anything more. Saudi Arabia had to know it would cause an uproar by doing this so they deliberately ruffled feathers. I do not know very much about Islam although I continue to learn or try to. Until the U.S.A. got involved in Iraq, i did not know there were two sects, The Shia or Shi'ite and The Sunni and that they despise each other beyond words. This is a very old hate which goes back to the death of The Prophet Mohammed and who would succeed him. It boggles my mind how much these two sects hate one another and the long history of terrible things they have done to each other in the name of their religion. It reminds me of the Catholics and Protestants going at it during the reformation and afterwards.
