Day 25 – Haughty 2 Chronicles 26 Haughty – proud, arrogant, thinking of yourself more highly than you ought. How long did it take you to think of someone you know who is like that? Are you like that? We’ve been taught that being proud or haughty is a sin. Not the kind of proud we have towards people we know and care about and do things that make us proud of them, but the kind that makes people run the other way when they see us coming because we are arrogant by nature. Paul told the people they shouldn’t think of themselves more highly than they ought. Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. (KJV) We are none of us any better than the other. Yet Uzziah did just that. He lifted himself up and thought of himself better than anybody else, especially the priests when he went into the temple to burn incense to God. Only the priests were to burn incense, no one else, and because of his sin against God, God made him leprous and he had to hurry out of the temple and live separately from the people the rest of his reign. What caused Uzziah to think he was better than anyone else? When Uzziah began his reign after his father Amaziah died, he built cities, fought the Philistines, and made a name for himself. His name was on everyone’s tongue and nations paid him tribute. And it all went to his head, and he lifted himself up to the point where he thought he could do anything and nobody could touch him. He forgot he was God’s servant as king over Judah and it was He to whom he served the people as king. As Christians, we are not our own. We are bought with a price – the price of Jesus’ blood on the cross for our salvation. Therefore we too must not think of ourselves more highly than we ought but seek to do God’s will in everything we do. There are a lot of Uzziah’s in the world. Be sure you are not one of them as you seek to do God’s will for your life. Let’s pray: Father, help me keep myself in Your will, not lifting myself up, being haughty or arrogant, but serving You in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. This reminds me of a Gospel song that says whenever good things happens may your name Lord be glorified and not mine. That let me remain less and less everytime as you are lifted up high
