In December the 22 my husband and I left our home to visit our younger son in the Western part of Washington state. My granddaughter and husband stayed at our place to care for animals and she had her 19 month old sister with her as well. The Electricity went out the night we left but they had a generator and oil lamps, propane cooking, wood heat and flashlights. We expected the power on in 24 hours and it was she said for two hours then heavy snow took windstorm weakened trees from big windstorm in late November down across the state highway to our place and across the road we live on and lots of power lines down and broken. The phones worked as long as the generator was on. But they ran out of gas and could not go anyplace for 3 days due to down trees. Nor could anyone help them. We got a call from our son who told us that finally the roads were cleared of down trees and he took them gas for the generator. We left for home the next day had a good visit with younger son and family for 5 days and good drive home except the last 45 miles due to snowing and lots of people driving to fast and slide offs. Many went around us fast only to slide of a couple three miles ahead. We went 30 miles an hour watched our GPS for road danger and things ahead and got home safe. Our electric power remained off from the 20th of December to January 1st. During that time we had a winter party anyway with generator power and good food and company and board games and movies. Our daughter was trying to get back from Tennessee with her husband driving an RV they left to get for his aunt they thought they would be home by the 28th of December but the RV kept breaking down they finally got home January 2nd. What a nightmare. During part of the power outage our phones went dead too due to batteries in the phone exchange office dying (We have no mobile phone service where we live it is a dead zone) So from December 26-January 1 no phones either. We had to drive 11 miles to get cell phone service. During that time we did not know a beloved friend and church member passed away as Pastors did not know due to the outages. We tried calling everyone once we got phones restored and left messages on his phone. Usually Harold called twice a week as he was elderly and lonely. But we thought with holidays and power outage etc he just could not be reached. it was not til yesterday when our daughter who had been home for a week went to pick him up for church learned he had passed away and no one thought to call us as pastors of his church. Now we are working with the sister who did not know what to do to find a place for a memorial for him. We rent from a Sunday fellowship so cannot use that place as the family wants the service on Sunday when all the family can attend. We can't do it Saturday as that is the Sabbath of our fellowship and some of the family of our deceased member works that day anyway. So have had some ups and downs and good and bad times. And now some sad times. I sure hope the rest of 2016 is better as it is not starting out too well Rest in Peace Harold we will all miss you.
