Health Care Identity Thieves

My parents got a phone call today about how their credit card was being used in Florida (we live in Pennsylvania) to make different purchases. The credit card was cancelled and a detective was placed on the scene right away while we all tried to figure out where the card could have been compromised since it has a chip in it. Hours later my mother heard the result.
They signed up for new health insurance last month and this woman that was responsible was one of the ones in charge of verifying the payment information. She was using the cards coming through for her own means. She was arrested and will be processed (through a meat grinder hopefully) however the law deems fit.
I just have to wonder how many other people being herded by the government into buying health insurance are being pushed into people that have ulterior motives. It seems nothing is safe any more. Of course I have yet to set up insurance because I hate the system and what it stands for and for being forced into paying more for others than I already am, but do I really want to just give my information to people that will rob me?
It needs to be stopped. And the people taking advantage of this situation need to be eradicated. Pay close attention to your information and identities if you are signing up for health insurance so you aren't also becoming a target.

well it sounds like this is less about what they bought with the card, and more about a thief. I handle cards all of the time, people need to pay, i take all their info and make a payment for them. I could write that stuff down, or memorize it, and then do something similar, but I do not.

Well that's exactly what happened. The location is the point as well, since it was the detective's first guess, it implies there are many thieves targeting that now.

Insurers robbing their customers is not something new, but it is the first time I read a story like the one that happened to your parents. It is stupid as it has been certainly easy to cross-check data and find who was guilty. They are usually more smart.

I think this had to do with another company that works with the insurance companies to lighten the load. It was also the detective's first guess, so that goes to say this isn't the first case. I bet it's happening a lot if he guessed so easily.

@OneOfMany It is rare here to pay an insurance with a credit card. They usually ask for a check the first time and a direct debiting for the following payments.

@topffer Well I would think it would be by check and then direct, because that makes the most sense, but things are backwards all over.

Well that's just outrageous, so glad the woman was caught, I hope she sits in jail for a long time with nothing to do but think about what she has done.

I'm still rooting for the meat grinder!
