(Possible tiny spoiler for The Force Awakens if you have not yet seen it)
The place I work started selling some Star Wars stuff right before Christmas Hoping, like everyone else, to profit off the movie The Force Awakens.
Glasses, boxes, puzzles, t-shirts. All our stuff had one thing in common. Rey was not on any of them.
Hmm..well that's odd. She's only the main character of the movie. Maybe she should have some merchandise.
Meanwhile, this morning, I found out its not just us. Rey has been left out of action figure sets. She was left out of a couple of Millennium Falcon sets. She was left out of Star Wars MONOPOLY!
Now, Star Wars has always been pretty full of testosterone, but there have always been strong females in the background. Leia. Amidala. Ahsoka Tano.
And Star Wars is owned by Disney now. And hasn't Disney always been about the "princess?"
Maybe that is where the problem lies. Rey is not much of a "princess."
I wonder if she would have been left out of the playsets if she could have been marketed in a poofy dress in a ballroom instead of piloting a ginormous spaceship.
Toymaker Hasbro said that including her would have spoiled the movie for those who had not seen it.
Wait, what?
What do you think?
Meanwhile a lot of people have noticed (I'm just a little slow on the uptake) There was/is a #wheresrey movement, and now some Rey toys are showing up.
Is it right to leave Rey out of Star Wars playsets? Will boys NOT want to play with Rey? Would it make girls want to play with "boy toys" if she were included?
