Model Misconceptions

Recently some of my friends found out I model. It's not a secret but not something I put on blast (until now I suppose). Anyway, I've noticed about the same questions getting asked. One of the biggest misconceptions is the glamour life. I do get sponsorships and don't need to worry about dresses for prom, but glamour is far from the truth. A lot of it is objectifying. Agents tell us we're the prop, designers see us as hangers, and make up artists see us as a canvas. We don't own any images. Pictures taken of us do not belong to us. They belong to the photographer. The photographer can sell and submit your images but you cannot. You cannot edit the pictures and may only use it for your portfolio. It can be tiring, especially when you're still in school. Last year when I was planning for a video shoot, my mom and I had to prep up to go to the airport straight after school/work to fly to New York, and planned to arrive back home Sunday evening. Monday, of course, we go back to school/work.

I am a photographer, not a professional yet but I am building my portfolio, what I do is pay the model for the shoot and then I give them either a cd or now a SD Card of all photos taken to use how they see fit with my only requirement that they give me proper credit.. which I do make sure to leave my stamp on each photo and ask they not alter it.

Yes any profession has its ups and downs. Still you have a good portfolio and it is an accomplishment. I was a beautician and wanted to do make up for models and the like in my previous life lolz..I can see the canvas aspect of it for sure.

@DanciaKS I have not seen your portfolio my friend, but would gladly have a look. I was just commending you for your achievements in life already. It is good to be focused and use your skills.
