getting home theater to work with philips dsx-5500

I have a sylvania home theater system that I am trying to hook up to my philips hdtv with a philips dsx-5500 satellite receiver. I want the surround sound feature of the sylvania to be on when watching the satellite channels. There is no input jacks on the sylvania so I can only use it for the stereo and dvd functions. How can I hook it up to the satellite receiver instead of to the tv and get the surround sound to work all the time. I know there is a a/v matrix function on the dsx-5500 but have not been able to make that work either. thanks, Kevin
