January 24, 2016 5:14am CST
Though India got the freedom from the British Rule on 15 August 1947, the Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950 and this day has been celebrated each year as the Republic Day. The chief guest of the Republic Day 2016 will be the French President Francois Hollande. Last year, US president Obama, with his wife Michelle, came to India as the chief guest on this occasion. The Republic Day Parade is worth watching and exciting. You can check this link to watch the Rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade 2016.
This Republic Day will have many firsts, including a French marching contingent. Indian Army dogs will also march down the Rajpath after a gap of 26 years. T...

Besides the parade how else is it celebrated? I know for our Independence Day (July 4) we have fireworks, parades, bbques, picnics, etc.

@GreatMartin The most important agenda of this day is the Parade in which the Military capability, Social unity, and Cultural heritage of our land are displayed. Beyond this, Schools conduct flag hoisting calling all children and staff though it is being a holiday. In public grounds and street junctions, local leaders hoist the National Flag. Many wear the tricolour flag on their shirts or coats. Some people wear the tricolour dress on this day. There are special programmes in television to entertain people on this day -- especially the live Parade. In these days, everywhere we find high-security alert due to recent terroristic activities and people are afraid, to some extent, to move in public.

I heard on the radio today that our President was going to India but I did not knew that it was for an important anniversary on Tuesday. Happy Birthday India ! Say hello to my President if you see him.

@topffer This is the fifth time, we find that France is being honoured as our guest in our Republic Day Parades. This time, French contingents are marching with our soldiers on the Parade ground.

Your Republic day is the same as our Australia Day. I was listening to a man from India talking about both events being on the same day.

Thanks for this info. India faces many challenges, more than most others, being such a diverse country with freedom and democracy taken to extreme lengths by few. Gandhi said it for everyone - "Be the change you wish to see in the world". Sometimes, I feel it thrives due to its confusion and contradictions! siva
