My family on my mother's side came straight out of Kentucky. They lived off the land, growing and hunting through the forests and mountains all through he south. They endured the wilderness, and were famous outdoor frontiersman, except when it came time to fish. For some odd reason, they always came to Indiana.
In 1949, my grandfather was told to either head up north or face jail time.
He ended up right here in Indianapolis, Indiana, but brought his hunting savvy with a tradition that still lives on to this day.....our annual deer hunt.
Decades ago, my awesome family built a cabin which we go every year during deer hunting season. Big enough to accommodate all, it looked more like a mansion.. In the front, nailed to the porch of this Victorian-style house, are hundreds of cut-off shirt tails. These are the back of shirts that get cut off the back of every man who did not kill a deer that year. I have yet to kill one, but, they have yet to catch me still. 35 years of me running away every year proved successful, (which will be my next story).
My uncle started building this cabin with the left-over material he got from building houses. Within 10 years, we all had a cabin to go to. It sat on top a hill and looked like a crown on top of a king's head. Many great times were spent there, and I"ll always remember them.
Two years ago my uncle passed away at the cabin. The world lost a legend that day, and with that, his cabin. One of his daughter's was dating a thief and he decided he was going to rob the place soon after he died. Stupid decided to take a saw-zall and cut the gas pipes, which blew up the house, and everybody's things with it. He never served time, but decided his life was more valuable staying away.
I no longer go hunting with the fellas though. Family arguments and differences keep me away, but I"ll always remember that cabin we all pitched in to build.
You would have never thought such a beautiful mansion could come from scrap.

I'm so sorry about what happened to your family relationship and the the Cabin, don't you have at least a picture of it? I'm fascinated with the cut shirt tails, first time I've heard of that tradition
