How often have you actually gotten to see what a woodpecker does to a tree? I'm pretty sure I have never gotten a good look. I have often wondered what the holes look like. Are they a jumbled mess of pecking or are the holes they make pretty precise. I got my answer in Oregon when I was there last week visiting my husbands sister. She has an outdoor fireplace and one afternoon while enjoying a wonderful fire I went to her woodpile to get some more wood and sitting next to her pile I found this wonderful piece of wood. She asked we didn't burn this piece and I totally agree. What to my wondering eyes should appear but this log with a gazillion woodpecker pecked holes. Most of the holes didn't go all the way into the interior of the wood, maybe he was just practicing his hole making abilities. The holes go all the way down and all the way around this piece of tree trunk. I was amazed and got my camera out.

I've never seen anything like that. I'm amazed that the edges of the holes seem to be raised - I wonder why that is.

@fishtiger58 I think they have a special plate in their heads which absorbs pressure , plus a special bone which acts like a seat belt

That is truly fascinating. I'm glad neither of you wanted to burn it. It's a great conversation piece and something you don't see very often.

The tree shouldn't have put up with this. It should have barked back.

I love to hear them in our trees. Usually they are up high in the tree so we can't see the marks they are making. Have a blessed day.
