Today in 1845 "The Raven" By Edgar Allen Poe was published in The New York Evening Mirror. I wasn't really a big fan of Edgar Allen Poe in school, I guess it's because we covered so much of his work. My Senior year of high school I did attempt to memorize the entire poem to recite for extra credit in English. Did you study his work in School?

Poe, yes, quickly in high school. I know The Raven better, as it has been translated in France by Baudelaire and then by Mallarmé, 2 great poets. I remember to have seen this poem quoted by Théophile Gautier, which was a poet and a writer with many similarities with Poe. It was in a biography of Nerval, another poet, if my memory is good. Gautier wrote a 1002nd night in 1842, 3 years before Edgar Allen Poe. Baudelaire translated a part of Poe's writings. All in all, E.A. Poe is indirectly part of our literature.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You stroke a responsive chord : I have collected books from 19th C French writers during 30 years. I have never been a great fan of Baudelaire, although I have had a preprint of his Flowers of Evil. I think that I have still somewhere (I am moving and I have more than 20000 books, all in boxes actually) the first French translation of Poe. It was "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" published in a French Magazine soon after the US original in the 1840's. The translator is unknown. I am glad that you started this discussion. Many 19th C writers are unjustly forgotten today. In my mind it is the century which saw the best skillful writers.

I have heard of Baudelaire. I think if we were to look more deeply we'd find many similarities between each Nation. Little things like this that give a "nod" to one another.

I was a big fan of Edgar Allen Poe. I once wrote a parody of the Raven.
