Looked at wedding venues this past weekend...

My best friend is getting married in the upcoming fall, and as the dutiful maid of honor, I accompanied her to many different venues when we both had the day off, to try to determine where her reception would be. Little did I know or expect the chaos and frustration that would ensure! We visited a total of 6 places in about 6 hours - a variety of entertainment centers, bar/grills, VFWs. Each and every single place had something wrong with it. And this is not just my friend being a bridezilla, but literally we experienced the following problems: A) Too small of a room to host a band, a bar, and about 200 and some guests. B) Too dingy of a room - many of the older bars we visited had smoke colored walls or wallpaper crumbling from the side of things. Not very posh at all. C) Super restrictive - all of the event centers required police presence - not just security - but police, which costs about $50 an hour. D) The date my friend wanted was booked - which is not even until next November. It seems like everything is wrong. I didn't realize it would be so difficult to come up with a venue, but there was literally something to left to be desired with each venue we checked out in the area. Do you have any experience with this? As a bride or groom, what was the one thing you had to compromise on?

It's best to get married at a less popular time of year. We were married in mid-March and booked everything just 6-8 weeks before the ceremony.

Good point! I am sure it is a bit cheaper to go in "OFF" months as well. My friend is set on their anniversary which is in October. Apparently fall months have become almost as crazy with weddings as summer months! Who knew!

We got married in our yard. Lots of work and only for a small group like 50 or 60. My first wedding we booked the community hall in the small town where we lived. Not posh, but pretty much where everyone had their wedding reception.
