Day 6 – Debt Free Nehemiah 5 Debt is something we can all relate to. We have it if we rent or own our homes. We have it if we have a loan on our vehicles. We have it if we owe anybody any kind of money of any kind. Along with our debt is the interest rate we pay in order to enjoy the simple things in life. Nehemiah uncovered a debt the children of Judah were not supposed to have according to the Law of Moses. God told the people they could exact usury or interest on any debt owed them by the people of the nations surrounding them, but they were not to exact any kind of interest or debt from their fellow Jews. Leviticus 25:35 And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee. 36 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. 37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. (KJV) The people had sold their sons and daughters, mortgaged their lands and crops and put themselves in debt with interest to the nobles and rulers of the land. Nehemiah told them they could not do that and demanded they give back lands, vineyards, olive yards, houses, and part of the money for the corn, wine, and oil exacted from them. He also told them they were to fear or trust God and walk after His laws and ordinances. The people agreed to restore everything and require nothing of them, and made an oath to that affect. Before you became a Christian, you were enslaved to sin. Satan was your master and he demanded everything from you with interest. However, Jesus paid the debt we owed, including all the interest on our lives so we owe nothing any longer to Satan. However, there are still Christians living in bondage to Satan. He still exacts interest from you, enslaving you to the lifestyle you had before you accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord. You owe Satan NOTHING. Jesus PAID it ALL. Interest included for your life through His blood. It is time to tell Satan you will not pay him another cent, penny, farthing, denarius or whatever the smallest denomination of your currency is called. Your debt is paid. It is time to start living your life debt free. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus, to pay my debt, interest included, so I might live debt free. Help me to realize I owe nothing to Satan and he has no power over me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 1 February 2016 by Valerie Jean Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay
