Lou Gehrig was born just after the turn of the century, in 1903. He was probably one of the first baseball players to achieve national hero status. Born in New York, he began his baseball career with the New York Yankees in 1925, but was sometimes overshadowed by his teammate Babe Ruth. During the first 14 years of his career, he broke every baseball record there was with a batting average of .340 and playing 2,130 consecutive league games. In 1939, he retired because his physical strength was failing. He was then diagnosed with a rare and fatal disease of the nervous system. The disease was officially named Lou Gehrig’s disease after he died in 1941. Wow! He was only 38 years old. I didn’t realize that..

The Pride of the Yankees is a great baseball movie that starred Gary Cooper as Gehrig. The farewell speech is very moving and Babe Ruth plays himself.

Yes he was one of the greats and as a Yankees fan I would say he left a great legacy and many in the game appreciate what he did even if they did not like the team he played for.
